Scatters in slots, explained

Scatters are special slot symbols that pay or trigger features wherever they land, without needing to sit on a payline. Most often, three or more scatters anywhere on the reels start a bonus such as free spins or a pick-and-win round, and many games also pay a scatter prize based on the total bet. Unlike wilds, scatters normally do not substitute for other symbols.

Rules vary by game: some need scatters on specific reels, some award extra spins for landing more of them during a bonus, and some combine the scatter and wild roles in one symbol. Because they drive feature frequency, scatters are central to how a slot feels to play. Operators should make sure the paytable explains the trigger clearly, since feature conditions are a frequent source of player questions.
