Drop in casinos: two meanings on the floor

Drop has two meanings in a casino. In table operations, the drop is the money players exchange for chips at a table: the cash goes into a locked drop box under the table and is counted later. Dividing what the table wins by its drop gives the hold percentage, a standard measure of table performance.

Players use the word differently. To drop a hand is to give it up: folding in poker, or surrendering in blackjack, which returns half of the original stake. It is also used loosely for money lost, as in “I dropped $200 tonight”. The meanings are different enough that context makes it clear which one is meant.

Drop and hold online

Online, the equivalent figures are turnover, gross gaming revenue and hold percentage. A good back office reports them by game, provider and player segment.
