Casino Glossary

Skin in casino slang: an old word for money

Skin is slang for money, used both inside and outside casinos and mostly heard in the United States. It belongs to a long list of nicknames for dollars that also includes bucks, moolah, cheddar and stacks. Skin is one of the oldest of the group, so you are less likely to hear it today than its better-known cousins, which makes it worth recognising when it does come up.

The term is believed to date back to the early 1800s, when animal skins were commonly traded. Lesser hides were valued at a third or half of a dollar, while a buck’s skin was worth a whole dollar, which may explain why both “buck” and “skin” ended up meaning money. A related slang term is sawbuck, a $10 bill.

Why table slang matters to operators

Slang like skin, dime or sawbuck mostly lives at the table and in chat. Live dealer hosts and support agents who recognise it can follow players’ conversations about stakes and respond naturally instead of asking for clarification.
