Tells in poker: the signals that give a hand away

Tells are the subtle signs or quirks a player, or even a dealer, shows that an observant opponent can turn to their advantage. They include body language, the smallest facial expressions, tone of voice and the words someone chooses. Experienced poker players often needle opponents into talking more than they should, then watch for patterns.

A classic example is a player who smirks or repeats the same movement every time a strong or weak hand arrives. The very best players are said to judge the rough strength of an opponent’s hand before the hand even starts. That is why so many professionals play in hats or sunglasses and keep their focus on the game, unmoved by what others do: the less they show, the less the table can read.

Tells in online poker

Online, physical tells give way to betting patterns, timing and chat. Players study how quickly opponents act and how they size their bets, which is why consistent action timers and well-designed auto-actions matter in poker software.
