Firing describes a player who keeps putting big bets into play, one after another. In poker it usually comes as “firing a barrel”: a bet on the flop is the first barrel, a follow-up bet on the turn is the second and a river bet is the third. Firing several barrels can mean real strength, or a bluff that the player is determined to see through.
At other tables, a player who is “firing” is betting large amounts in quick succession. Either way, it takes a deep bankroll to keep firing, especially in poker with its several betting rounds, which is why the term is most often linked with high rollers and whales.
Reading stake escalation
A rapid rise in stake size can mark a valuable player, or one who is losing control. Player segmentation and responsible gambling markers help teams tell the two apart and respond appropriately.
