Grind meaning: small stakes, long sessions

To grind is to play long sessions at modest stakes, building profit slowly through skill and discipline rather than chasing one big win. The word comes from everyday speech, where grinding means repeating the same effort over and over to reach a goal.

A grinder makes many small, low-risk decisions, avoids big swings and accepts that progress is gradual: betting small means a loss can be absorbed and play can go on. The term is most common in poker, where grinders put in volume at regular games and rely on a small edge over weaker players. It sits at the opposite end of the scale from the whale or high roller who bets big and hopes for a lucky break. US pro Michael Mizrachi is nicknamed “The Grinder” after the way he built his career. Low-limit casinos are known as “grind joints”.

Serving grinders

Grinders bring steady, predictable turnover. Low minimum bets, fast tables and rewards based on volume rather than stake size suit them well.
