In blackjack, to hit is to ask the dealer for another card to improve your total, and the card you receive is also called a hit. “Hit me” is the classic request. Many casinos expect a hand signal as well, so the decision is visible on camera: tap the felt beside your cards at a shoe game, or lightly scratch your cards towards you in a hand-held game.
Away from blackjack, to hit means to land something. A slot player hits a winning combination, a bonus round or the jackpot, and a poker player hits the card that completes a straight or flush. In game design, hit frequency describes how often a slot returns any win at all, and it is one of the key numbers in a game’s math profile.
