A dealer is the casino employee who conducts a table game: dealing the cards, taking and paying bets and enforcing the rules. In many places “dealer” and “croupier” mean the same thing, with dealer the usual word at card games such as blackjack and poker. Larger games may add other staff; baccarat, for example, traditionally has a ladderman watching over the table.
Dealers learn their trade at dealing schools, and in many jurisdictions they also need a licence or permit from the local gaming authority before they can work. Every routine they follow, from washing the cards to cutting chips and showing empty hands when leaving the table, exists to show players that the game is fair and has not been tampered with.
