Crossfire in casinos: dealer chatter at the table

Crossfire is table-side slang for dealers or other casino staff talking among themselves, or with players, about anything except the game in progress. The word is mostly heard on land-based floors, where a dealer might get drawn into conversation with a colleague, a pit boss or a talkative regular.

It matters most at craps, where the stickman sets the pace: if they are busy chatting, the game slows to a crawl, which frustrates players who came for a fast, lively table. Some guests enjoy the banter and join in, but many prefer the dealer’s attention on the layout. Casinos discourage crossfire because distraction leads to payout mistakes and can give cover to irregular play. Players can help by not keeping dealers talking in the middle of a round.

The live casino angle

Chat is part of the appeal of live dealer games, but studios keep it under control so conversation never delays betting windows or settlement. Pace and accuracy matter more to players than small talk.
